Twenty minutes to leave: the story behind HippoMouth Inventory
After a 20-minute evacuation during the 2023 Okanagan fires, Kim Mussenden started HippoMouth Inventory to help people document what they own.
My name is Kim, and I recently started HippoMouth Inventory. The idea came about after we were evacuated during the Okanagan fires in 2023.
We had a knock on the door from the RCMP and had to leave within 20 minutes. We grabbed our important papers, but everything else had to be left behind.
Trying to remember a whole room
An insurance claim may involve an itemized list of belongings, supported by photos, video and other records. Preparing that list after a loss can take countless hours. Just think about one room: your bedroom.
What would you remember?
A custom bed frame. A king-size mattress, mattress protector, sheets and pillowcases. Four king-size pillows, two decorative pillows and two throw blankets. A large area rug, two lamps, two bedside tables and two dressers.
Then come the smaller details: electronics chargers, six pieces of wall art, a table and custom chair, eyeglasses, an essential-oil diffuser and tray, three plug-in motion sensors, six decorative ornaments, a basket, three skin creams, a pen and paper, and a 50-inch TV.

Turning that experience into a service
That’s where HippoMouth Inventory comes in. We provide a comprehensive Excel spreadsheet listing belongings room by room, together with your photos. Hover over an item’s cell, such as a bedroom suite, and its picture appears.
You receive two USB sticks: one to keep somewhere safe away from the property, and another to update at home as needed.
For homes and businesses
We provide inventory lists for residential and commercial clients. These records can support documentation for fire or water damage, theft recovery, rental properties, estate planning and divorce asset listings.
