A cleaner home, less guesswork: 7 questions with Chellsa
What a house clean costs, when to book a deep clean, and how to make the most of your cleaner’s visit—with Chellsa Hartwell of Chellsa’s Cleaning.
What would make having a cleaner feel easier?
Knowing what to expect is a good place to start. What does a clean usually cost? Do you need a deep clean, or would regular visits make more sense? And should you tidy before the cleaner arrives?
Chellsa Hartwell of Chellsa’s Cleaning answers seven everyday questions, with a practical approach to making the most of your cleaning time.

1. How much does it cost to have a house cleaned, and what affects the price?
Generally, it costs $120 to $160 to have your house cleaned. It depends on the level of detail you’re looking for, how many people and pets live there, whether it’s a family home, how clean your household is, and the size of your home.
Tips aren’t required, but they’re appreciated.
2. What’s the difference between a regular clean and a deep clean?
A deep clean is more thorough and includes more cleaning tasks than a regular maintenance clean. It can be done seasonally or as a one-time clean. It’s also useful when a home hasn’t been maintained and is dirtier than usual.

3. How often should I have my home professionally cleaned?
Every two weeks is sufficient for the majority of homes. If you have a high standard of clean, or your home gets dirty faster, you may prefer a weekly clean. If there are fewer people in your home, a monthly clean may be more appropriate.
4. Do I need to clean or tidy before a cleaner comes?
I recommend tidying before the cleaner arrives so they can focus on cleaning and accomplish more in the time allotted. The night before, clear surfaces and floors of personal items as much as possible.
It also helps to do the tasks the cleaner isn’t being hired for, such as laundry, dishes and taking out the garbage. A cleaner generally won’t do these tasks unless they’ve been specified.
If you’re a busy household and tidying beforehand isn’t possible, just say so. I’ll tidy as I clean, but it will add more time and cost.
5. How do I get hard-water stains and soap scum off shower glass?
Hire a professional!
6. What’s the best way to clean windows and mirrors without streaks?
I use a 50/50 mix of cleaning vinegar and water with a squirt of blue Dawn dish soap. Spray it on and wipe the glass with a microfiber cloth. You may have to go over it several times.
For windows, do this on a cloudy day.

7. How can I keep my home clean between visits without spending hours every day?
Keep your place tidy and put things away as you move through your day. Sweep the floors every couple of days.
I also recommend keeping disposable wipes in the bathrooms so you can easily clean the surfaces while you’re there.
