Big Plans for Your Home? Let’s Talk Permits.
Planning an addition or renovation? Start with your municipality, put your ideas on paper, and allow time for permit review.
You can already picture it: That dream addition to your home you’ve been thinking about since you first moved in.
Before the tools come out, give that idea a solid starting point. Understanding the permit process early helps you ask better questions and build a more realistic plan.
With inspiration from Levi at Papa Draftsman, here’s where to begin.
01 · Make your first call a useful one
Your local building or planning department is the place to ask whether your project needs a permit. Explain what you want to change and ask which drawings, documents, and approvals are required.
A little preparation helps: jot down your goals, gather a few photos, and prepare your questions.
02 · Put your ideas on paper
This is where your wish list starts becoming a workable design. A draftsperson can help prepare drawings for your application and explore how the space will function.
Think about everyday moments, too. Where will the groceries land? Will that doorway feel cramped? Good planning makes room for the details you’ll live with.
03 · Give the process some breathing room
Once your documents are ready, submit them through your municipality’s application process. Allow time for review and possible revisions before setting a firm construction schedule.
While you wait, start conversations with contractors and gather quotes. Confirm the necessary approvals are in place before beginning work that requires them.
Take the next step
You don’t need a finished blueprint to start a conversation. A clear idea, a few questions, and the right people can help you move forward.
